As we wait for invisible force field of technology to catch up with consumer demand, even the most flawless paint job combined with top shelf products will degrade over time. Ultraviolet rays from the sun and persistent moisture attack exterior coatings, causing paint to fade, peel, flake and literally fall right off of your house. As a professional painter in Everett of 15 years, when faced with the question of “should I paint now, or wait another year”, my recommendation is NOT to wait longer than necessary before repainting your home.
Repainting is substantially less expensive and less intrusive than a restoration project. Unfortunately, without realizing the consequences, many homeowners I speak with attempt to “stretch” the life of their exterior paint an extra season or more, only to pay twice as much down the road. In the northwest, waiting just one wet season too long may result in unexpected repairs or replacement of wood and other substrate materials.
Repaint so you won’t have to restore!
It’s time to repaint the exterior of your home:
- At the first sign of paint failure (fading, cracking, chipping or peeling paint)
- If your home is 5 years old or more and still has the original paint
- If it’s been 10 years or longer since your last repaint
- If you see other homes in your neighborhood being painted (they are approx the same age of yours)
- If you plan to sell your home (fresh paint will showcase a powerful first impression to prospective buyers)
No matter the reason that has caused you to consider painting or repainting your house, I can assure you that if you wait too long it will only get worse and more costly. Albeit rare, I always congratulate and give kudos to a homeowner that has the foresight to get their house repainted before mass paint failure occurs. All too often when I show up to a property to offer a painting proposal the condition of the paint is extreme and the cost to restore is also extreme. As a result most people will choose a cheaper bid and the job will not get the attention it should. Each successive coat of paint will cause more and more problems for future repaints. And so the cycle continues. I hope that you are thinking, “Let’s get the job done right the first time”. It will save us all time and resources in the end.
